Showerthought: I thought coal was just a messy hassle until I tried it for a leaf spring

I was a gas forge guy for years, convinced coal was too much work. Then a smith in Knoxville showed me his setup for working a truck leaf spring, and the heat control was way better for that thick steel. Anyone else switch fuels for a specific job and get surprised?

Got me thinking about using coke instead of plain coal.

My uncle tried that once, @richard_mason, and his whole grill went up in flames lol.

Yeah, the coke idea from @richard_mason reminds me of a neighbor who tried it for a backyard forge. It burned way too hot and fast for what he needed. Sometimes the simple stuff just works better.
