Spent 2 years fighting with cold shut on my damascus billets

An old timer at the New England Blacksmiths meetup told me to try a deeper chamfer on the edges before stacking and I got perfect bonding on the first try, has anyone else had success with pre-weld prep tricks?

yeah that deeper chamfer trick is legit man. i spent like 3 years fighting with cold shut and thought i was just bad at welding. tried everything from different flux to adjusting my forge temp. one buddy told me to hit a 45 degree bevel on the long edges before stacking and my next billet came out clean as hell. it's wild how something that simple changes the whole game.

Try a deeper chamfer next time and save yourself a solid year of misery.
