Tried a harbor freight anvil for a year, finally caved and bought a real one
Spent 12 months beating myself up on that soft cast thing near my shop in Dayton, every hammer blow felt like it was eating the energy. Swapped to a 110 lb Fisher last month and the difference is stupid, like night and day. Anyone else waste time on the cheap route before biting the bullet?

Wait, is that Fisher a cast steel anvil or a forged one? Ive seen a lot of folks mix those up, and it makes a huge difference in how they hit. Either way, I feel you on the Harbor Freight trap, that thing is basically a fancy doorstop with a horn. I ran one for a while too and thought I just sucked at forging, turns out the anvil was eating half my swing. The rebound on a real anvil is like the difference between hitting a brick wall and a spring, once you feel it you cant go back. Glad you made the switch, now you can actually blame your technique instead of the tool, lol.
