Update on my coal forge setup in the backyard

I always thought a bigger firepot was better for general work (you know, more heat, right?). But after trying my friend's smaller, deeper setup in Tacoma, I was wrong. His held a steady heat for a full hour on way less fuel while I was constantly feeding mine. The concentrated heat just worked better for the small blades I make. Anyone else run into this with their own forge design?

So what's the actual size difference between your firepot and your friend's? Like, are we talking a few inches or something way bigger?

Measured them side by side last weekend. His is a solid three inches wider, which doesn't sound like much until you see the flame difference. Makes a huge impact on heat output.
