Watched a guy burn up a good blade at the county fair forge demo

He was rushing to shape a leaf and kept the steel way too hot, just hammering away until it turned into a crumbly mess. I used to push my own heat cycles too far, but seeing that $40 piece of 1084 turn to dust made me religious about checking color with the lights off. How do you all keep yourself from rushing the forge work when you're in a groove?

Wasn't that 1084 getting way too hot for forging?

Honestly, I've had good results working it pretty hot.
