A guy at a con in Milwaukee said 'you're not a real collector unless you own the first edition'

He was judging my friend's modern copy of Cosmic Encounter, saying it didn't count. It happened right after the vendor hall opened, and it just sucked the fun out of the whole morning. Has anyone else run into this kind of gatekeeping at events?

Wait, what game are we even talking about here? (I'm totally lost.)

The guy at that Milwaukee con probably wasn't even alive when first edition Cosmic Encounter came out in 1977. I've owned a pest control business for 12 years and I see this same gatekeeping mindset when old timers say you're not a real exterminator unless you use a specific chemical that's been banned for a decade. But back to the game itself, here's a different angle: maybe that guy was trying to justify his own bad financial decisions. First edition copies go for like 300 bucks or more now, and people who overpaid for something often need to make others feel bad for not doing the same. Your friend's modern copy plays exactly the same and costs a fraction of the price, so who's really winning here?
