Just crossed 50 plays of Spirit Island and it finally clicked

I've been playing Spirit Island on and off for about 8 months, and last night I hit my 50th play logged on BGG. Something just flipped in my brain and I finally won a game against Prussia level 6 without sweating bullets. Has anyone else had a specific number of plays where a heavy game suddenly made sense for you?

Oh come on... 50 plays? That's basically a part-time job right there. I mean I'm glad it finally clicked for you but that's a lot of hours for a board game to figure out. Most folks just read the rulebook twice and play 5-10 times before they move on.

Consider that some games are designed with hidden depth that only reveals itself after many plays, like a puzzle box that keeps opening new layers. Fifty games might sound like a lot, but for a game like Spades or Bridge, that's just scratching the surface before you start getting good at it. Maybe this particular board game has that kind of long-term strategy, and the reviewer is just being honest about how much time it actually takes to appreciate it.
