Question about teaching new players...
A friend told me my rules explanation for 'Root' was too intense and they just wanted to play. I cut my usual 20 minute lecture down to the core of each faction and it went way better. How do you guys handle heavy games with new people?

Remember trying to teach my cousin Twilight Imperium by reading the rulebook out loud. He fell asleep on the couch before I finished the first page. Now I just set up a round and we play it out, explaining as we go. People need to touch the pieces and make a few mistakes to get it. Your friend was right to stop the lecture. Does your group usually let new players just jump in?

Yeah, that's the only way to do it with a big game... though I'd say you don't even need a full round first. Just set up the board, give everyone their stuff, and explain the goal. Let them do one turn, even if it's wrong. @holly_young35 has the right idea about just starting. Reading rules out loud is a sure way to kill the mood before you even begin. My group always throws new players right into the deep end, we just fix things as they come up.
