Tried a 4-player co-op game solo, now I get why the rulebook warns against it

Last month I picked up a heavy co-op game set in a haunted mansion and decided to run all four characters by myself. I thought it would be a good way to learn the rules, but after about 2 hours I realized I was basically playing chess against my own left hand, no tension at all. The surprise was that it actually helped me spot three rules I had been playing wrong in group sessions at my local game store in Austin. Has anyone else found solo play with multiple characters ruins the feeling but secretly fixes your rule knowledge?
