Unpopular opinion: My local game store's weekly meetup beats any online board game group.
Tried a popular Discord server for 6 months, but the in-person group at Tabletop Tavern in Springfield gets real laughs and teaches rules in half the time. Anyone else find face-to-face play just clicks better?

It's just board games, relax.

Six months on a Discord server sounds like a prison sentence. I tried one for three weeks and the constant notifications drove me nuts. Tabletop Tavern must have some magic because our local shop's meetups are always so loud and chaotic. You can't replace seeing someone's face when they pull off a crazy move. The rules explanation part is so true, online it takes forever with people typing questions. I'm glad you found a good spot.

Muting notifications was the only way I could handle those servers... it still felt like work just checking in though. @jones.grace is right about the rules part, it's way easier to just point at a board or a card. Our group got lucky and found a quiet corner in a library meeting room, which cut down on the shop chaos. Seeing the actual dice roll makes a big difference for me too, you just don't get that same tension online.
