Went to a board game cafe in Portland and nobody was playing anything heavier than Catan
I sat down for a 4 hour session hoping to find a group for something like Brass Birmingham but every table was just rolling dice on Ticket to Ride. Is there a secret signal I'm missing to find the actual geeks in these places?

I get what you're saying about not sweating the small stuff, but this is exactly the kind of thing where if nobody ever corrected anyone, we'd all just be playing wrong and arguing about it later.

I get what you're saying, but is it really that serious? I mean, you're getting worked up over someone mixing up a board game detail. In my experience, people mess up rules all the time, especially with games that have a lot going on like Ticket to Ride. Honestly, who cares if they thought there were dice? It's just a game, not a life or death situation. Your mileage may vary, but I'd rather just let it slide than correct everyone on the internet. Life's too short for that kind of energy.
