Finally saw my first weld pass look like a stack of dimes after 2 years in the trade
I been in the boilermaker local for about 2 years now, and my root passes have always looked like garbage. Like bird droppings on a hot summer day. Last week we were working on a water wall panel replacement at a plant outside of St. Louis. It was a tight spot, tight deadline, and I was pretty stressed. But something clicked on my third attempt. I slowed down my travel speed, kept my arc length super consistent, and the puddle just flowed. The foreman walked by and said "hey, that actually looks like you know what you're doing for once." It was a small thing but after hundreds of bad welds it felt like a real milestone. Anybody else remember that specific weld that made them feel like they finally got it?

That third attempt and the foreman's comment, what specifically changed in your prep or technique that you think made the difference? I'm curious if you adjusted your angle or the fit-up on that joint compared to the other tries. Sometimes it's one small variable that makes everything else click.
