Heard a foreman in Houston say he'd rather hire a guy who can read a tape than a guy who can weld
It was at the big plant job off I-10 last month. He was talking to another lead about a new hire who could run a bead but kept messing up simple measurements. It made me think about how much we focus on the big skills and forget the basics. What's one basic skill you think gets overlooked too much when training new people?

That foreman has a point about the tape measure. But honestly, welding is the harder skill to learn. You can teach someone to read a tape in an afternoon. A good weld takes years to master. Overlooking that just sets up a different problem down the line. They need both, but one is clearly more basic than the other.

Forget the tape, can they even show up sober and on time first?
