Just realized I picked the wrong welding rod for a high-pressure steam line repair last Tuesday.
Everyone swears by 7018 for everything, but for that specific 500 psi job in a tight space, I went with 6010 for the root pass and it gave me way better penetration control, even though the foreman said it was the wrong call.

Foreman at my last shop would lose his mind over rod choice. Watched him throw a whole box of 7018 once.

Gotta side with the foreman on this one lol. 6010 on a steam line is asking for trouble down the road, the slag inclusions are no joke. That 7018 is the standard for a reason, it makes a tougher weld that holds up under constant heat and pressure. You might get a good root but the whole joint needs that reliability. Sometimes the book answer is the right one, even in a tight spot.
