Just realized most guys aren't seating their tube sheets right before welding
I watched three different boilermakers skip the back-purging step on a 6-inch tube bundle last week and then wondered why they got porosity at the root - has anyone else noticed this getting worse on the newer jobsites?

Funny you mention that because I noticed guys on the newer crews don't even check their tube sheet fit before they start tacking. They just jam the tube in and start welding, then act surprised when the whole thing pulls out of alignment. Older boilermakers used to spend ten minutes just tapping tubes into place with a brass hammer to make sure the gap was consistent all the way around. Now it's like everyone's in a rush to get to the next jobsite and figure the post-weld heat treat will fix everything. That's a recipe for a call-back if I ever saw one lmao.

@stellat87 reminds me of watching a buddy try to level a washer with a crowbar. Sometimes slow is better.
