My old foreman told me to always double-check the fit-up before the final weld on a 36-inch header
I was working on a big steam project in Toledo last year, rushing to get a section done before the weekend. I figured the fit was close enough and went ahead with the weld. Sure enough, we had a quarter-inch gap after it cooled that needed a full cut-out and redo. That extra five minutes of checking would have saved me three hours of grinding and rework. Anyone else have a simple piece of advice from a mentor that saved your hide later on?

Actually I gotta disagree a bit. Yeah, checking fit-up is important, but I've seen guys get SO paranoid about it that they spend 20 minutes measuring and remeasuring a joint that's clearly fine. The "close enough" mindset isn't the problem - it's knowing WHEN close enough actually IS close enough. That quarter inch gap wasn't because you rushed, it was because you didn't understand the material would pull that much on a 36-inch header. My old foreman taught me to trust my eye but also to know the specific tolerances for each job. Sometimes a quick eyeball is all you need if you've done it enough times. You just got bit by a lesson on thermal movement, not by rushing the fit-up check.

Ever notice how the "close enough" mindset always ends up being the exact opposite? That quarter inch gap is basically the universe's way of charging interest on your rushed five minutes. Bet you'll never skip checking a fit-up again, right?
