Old school chalk line vs laser level for long seams, which way do you call it?
I started out with my dad's crew back in 04, we used a chalk line for every straight shot on a tank or a shell. Snap it, pop it, weld it. Worked fine, took maybe 5 minutes to set up on a 40 foot run. Now with the laser level I can mark out the same seam in under a minute, no chalk dust in my eyes, no fighting the wind on outdoor jobs. But here's the thing, I had a job last month in Gary where the laser battery died right after lunch and I had to go back to the chalk line. Took me a few tries to get the tension right again, my first snap was off by half an inch. I got it done, but it made me wonder if we lean on the laser too much and lose the basics. I've seen younger guys who can't read a level bubble without the digital readout. So what's your take, do you still keep a chalk line in your bag for backup, or is the laser just the standard now? Anyone else have a moment where the old tool saved a job when the new one quit?
