Old timer's advice on preheating paid off today

Had a senior fitter in Port Arthur tell me to let the plate soak at 250 for a full 20 minutes before welding, even if the job was behind. I always rushed it, thought it was a waste of time. Today we had a 2 inch thick flange weld that kept cracking on the test piece until I tried his way. Not a single crack after I waited it out. Anyone else have a habit they picked up from an older hand that just works even when it feels slow?

Man I always thought that was overkill too but this makes me want to try it.
