Rant: dropped $260 on a hydraulic torque wrench kit that stripped on the third bolt
Bought a cheap 1 inch drive hydraulic torque wrench kit off a guy in Baton Rouge for $260 because he swore it would handle tube sheet work on a small boiler job. Third bolt in, the socket rounded off and chewed up the nut, and we spent two hours cutting it free. Took it apart and the internals were pot metal, no way it ever saw real pressure. Anybody got a brand they actually trust for tube sheet work, or am I stuck renting from the supply house every time?
Man that hurts just reading it. Been there with a "great deal" torque wrench off marketplace that turned out to be made of cheese. Mine let go on a flange bolt and I ate the handle right in the knuckles, so at least you only lost time and a nut. The pot metal guts are the tell every time, you can usually feel how light the thing is compared to a real one. For tube sheet work I quit gambling on used stuff and just rent from the supply house now, the rental cost stings but it beats cutting bolts out all day. Sorry about your two hours, that guy in Baton Rouge owes you a refund and an apology.
