Watched a veteran fitter at the Detroit plant use a different tack weld sequence
He started from the center of a big seam and worked outwards instead of my usual end-to-end method. It cut our warping issue on a 10-foot pressure vessel shell section by more than half. Anyone else have a go-to trick for keeping things flat during fit-up?

That center-out trick is solid, but I've seen it backfire on thinner gauge stuff... like 3/16" plate. The heat can pile up in the middle and actually pull a low spot. For thinner material, we still do a back-step from one end, but we skip around a lot more, never welding two beads next to each other in order.

Man, that's a great point from @emery18. It's like when you're painting a wall. If you just keep working one wet section right into the next, you get ugly lap marks and it dries uneven. You gotta jump to a dry area, let the other part set. Same with tightening lug nuts, you go in a star pattern so the pressure spreads out. It's all about managing force, whether it's heat or tension, so it doesn't pile up and wreck your work.
