I thought paper grain direction was overblown, then I bound a 300 page book the wrong way
For my first two years of binding I ignored grain direction completely. Everyone on the forums kept saying it matters but it felt like a rule people repeat without thinking. Then last month I bound a 300 page book on short grain paper and the boards warped within a week. The spine curved so bad the book won't close flat. Now I check grain direction on every sheet before I even fold. Has anyone else had a project go sideways before they finally believed the grain thing?

Grain really does matter once you see it go wrong. My first hardcover was on grain short paper too and the whole text block curled like a potato chip by day three, covers lifting at the corners. Now I fold every sheet once to feel the pull before cutting anything. Skipping that step just costs you a book.
