My backing press gave out halfway through a 300 page Smyth sewn text block yesterday.

I had to clamp it with two old woodworking clamps and a piece of scrap maple to finish the rounding, anyone got a good source for a used press in the Chicago area?

Haha nothing like a midday "backing press fails with 300 sheets of paper" surprise, am I right? I’m with @thompson.tyler on the clamp life - my whole workshop runs on that sort of "creative problem solving" (which is just a fancy way of saying I'm too cheap to buy the right tool).

Heard about a buddy who had his press fail mid-project last winter. He ended up using a big C-clamp and a chunk of countertop to get through it, which was a total mess. I mean, that kind of jury-rigging is so stressful when you're in the middle of something. I don't know a source offhand, but maybe check with some of the smaller print shops? Sometimes they upgrade and sell the old gear. Good luck, that sounds like a rough spot to be in.

Big C-clamp and a chunk of countertop" sounds like my whole shop setup.
