Watched my friend try that exact method last week. He ended up with a ruler shaped like a banana and a new scar.

So what's the actual method here? Because @charlie373 has a point about the metal ruler, but a knife can still wander if you're not careful. Are we talking about scoring and snapping, or some jig setup? Tessa's story about the banana ruler is a perfect warning about using flimsy guides. A cheap metal speed square clamped down might work better for short cuts.
