Reading a 1920s trade journal and saw they used fish glue for leather bindings. Had no idea that was a thing.

Yeah "fish glue" does sound nasty lol. I had to fix an old book and used wheat paste instead. Mixed flour and water, cooked it a bit, worked like a charm and didn't smell weird.

Fish glue gets a bad rap but it's actually a solid choice for some jobs. The smell fades completely once it dries, and it stays flexible for years. Wheat paste can get brittle over time, especially on older paper. Traditional bookbinders used fish glue for a reason, it holds up. Not saying it's for everything, but it works well when you need a long lasting fix.
