TIL my method for rounding spines was actually weakening the books

A binder in Chicago told me I was over-sanding the shoulder before casing in, which explained why my 2019 commissions started coming loose after a few months.

Explains why my books fall apart so fast.

Honestly I've had some paperbacks for YEARS that are still fine. Maybe it's how you handle them?

Nah, I gotta disagree a little here, @perez.elliot. Some of us just have bookcases that don't protect from humidity, you know? My old house had a damp basement, and even the sturdiest paperback got wavy pages after a couple years. But I've also had a few paperbacks that literally lost pages on the first read, so maybe quality control is part of it too.
