Am I the only one who dropped $15 on a magnet sweep at a Portland estate sale and it paid for itself in one call? | Boring But Cool Jobs - Pinecone Attack
Am I the only one who dropped $15 on a magnet sweep at a Portland estate sale and it paid for itself in one call?
I work HVAC and a retired tin knocker sold me his old sweep for $15 in Portland back in March, and it has already saved me from losing 4 sheet metal screws down a floor vent twice, which beats fishing around with a coat hanger like I did for 12 years, so what is the weird cheap tool you bought that your old boss would have laughed at?
The "fishing around with a coat hanger like I did for 12 years" line got me because my own version of that is a bent piece of wire I keep in my toolbox and refuse to throw out. My dumbest cheap buy was a $3 telescoping mirror with an LED on it, and I laughed at myself the whole walk to the register. Then I used it to read a serial number plate stuffed behind a furnace where my phone camera could not fit, and now it rides in my front pocket every day like a tiny flashlight trophy. My old boss would have called it a gadget for people scared of the dark, right before borrowing it and never giving it back. So no, you are not the only one, and honestly the tools that cost less than lunch are always the ones that end up mattering most lol.
