Watched a guy at the Des Moines airport fix 60 luggage carousels and now I want his job
I was stuck at the Des Moines airport for 4 hours last Tuesday waiting on a delayed flight and I ended up standing near the baggage claim just people watching. This older guy in a beat up navy jacket came out with a clipboard and started checking every single carousel belt by hand, like running his palm along the underside where nobody looks. I asked him what he was doing and he said he does a full inspection every 2 weeks because a jammed belt once threw a suitcase 15 feet and cracked a tile. He showed me the maintenance log he keeps in a binder, 4 years of entries, one page per carousel, all handwritten. He said the weirdest thing he ever pulled out of the track was a full rotisserie chicken still in the bag. Tbh I never thought about who keeps those things running but now I notice every belt I step on. Anybody here actually work on conveyor systems? Is it as calm as it looked or was he just having a good day?
