A greenhouse worker in Ohio told me tap water is killing my seedlings, is he right or just being fussy?

He said the chlorine and minerals build up in the soil and mess with root uptake, but I've used the same hose water for 3 seasons with fine results, so who do I trust, the guy who grows 5,000 flats or my own luck, and has anyone else switched to rain barrels after a similar talk?

Aw, come on now, the guy's not totally wrong but he's overselling it a bit. Chlorine does evaporate if you let the water sit out for a day, and most municipal water is fine for seedlings unless you're on a well with crazy mineral levels. Your three seasons of good luck probably mean your water's not that hard, so I'd keep doing what works but maybe test your soil every few years just to be safe.
