Botanic garden in Des Moines had a plant I'd never seen before

I swung by the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden last weekend on a whim. They had this agave from Mexico that was over 12 feet tall, I guess it had been growing there since 1989. Never knew those things could get that massive in a greenhouse setting. Has anyone else seen a mature agave in person and been surprised by the size?

Same thing happened to me at a smaller garden in Omaha a few years back. @the_jesse is right, it is wild how long they sit there just quietly growing. Makes you realize how much of life is just slow, steady progress that you only notice when you take a step back. Kind of like how you never notice your neighbor's kid getting taller until they suddenly look you in the eye.

1989? That thing has been sitting there quietly for over 30 years just getting bigger and bigger. Would've loved to see it in person.
