Heard a teenager call a fiddlehead fern 'weird looking broccoli' today

I was at the farmer's market Saturday morning and this kid probably 14 or 15 points at a basket of fiddleheads and says that to his mom. Made me laugh but also got me thinking about how much I took for granted growing up knowing what wild plants looked like. My grandpa had me identifying ferns and mushrooms by the time I was 10 just from walking in the woods with him. Now most kids see a fern and think it's some exotic vegetable from another planet. Has anyone else noticed how little plant knowledge gets passed down anymore?

Why do kids today think food comes from a store and not the ground?

Did you catch that episode of John Oliver where they showed a kid who thought cows grew in the ground? It's pretty eye opening but I'm not putting all the blame on kids. A lot of schools have cut back on field trips to farms and stuff like that. Plus grocery stores really push that "farm fresh" branding without showing any actual dirt or animals. It's just easier for a kid to think eggs come from a carton than to ask where they really come from.
