My favorite fern pot cracked right in half during a repotting session last weekend
I was trying to move my big Boston fern into a new 12 inch ceramic pot, and the old one just split down the middle as I lifted it. Soil went everywhere all over my kitchen floor, and I ended up using a plastic storage bin as a temporary home for the roots. Has anyone else had a pot fail on them like that out of nowhere?

...and honestly that's probably because of the angle you were lifting from, not the pot itself. I read somewhere that ceramic pots have a surprising amount of stress points near the bottom, and if you're not lifting straight up, they can just give out. Sounds like you got unlucky with the pressure hitting the wrong spot. I've had a couple of clay pots crack on me during moves, but never a full split like that. At least the Boston fern is tough enough to survive a plastic bin for a bit while you find a proper replacement.

Ceramic pots are way more fragile than people give them credit for. I always lift from the bottom edge now and keep both hands under the pot to distribute the weight better. Saved a few pots that way during the last move.
