Overheard a guy at the nursery say he only buys native plants now

He said he spent $200 last year on non-native stuff that all died by July, then switched to local species and lost nothing. Made me think about how we push exotic plants when the basics work better.

Yeah the "all died by July" part really hit me because that's exactly what happened to me two summers ago. I spent like $80 on those fancy eucalyptus plants from the garden center and they just gave up by August, meanwhile my neighbor's wild bergamot and bee balm are still going strong from three years ago. I wonder how many people give up on gardening entirely after that kind of failure, not realizing it's the plants not the person.

Did you try sunflowers? I planted some and they didn't die but got too big and shaded everything.
