Repotting with a $6 cake cooling rack changed my whole setup
After three rootbound disasters last spring, I flipped a cheap metal rack over the pot rim to keep the plant suspended while I teased out the roots, and the drainage worked so well I stopped buying fancy potting mats altogether, anyone else use kitchen stuff for this?

The "$6 cake cooling rack" thing sounds clever but I don't get how it actually helps. If the pot is sitting on the rack, the roots still hang in the air while you work, and half the soil falls through the gaps onto your floor anyway. I just lay the plant on its side and roll the pot a bit, then work the root ball loose with my hands over a bucket. A rack adds another thing to clean and store, and cheap metal ones rust fast once they get wet. Kitchen stuff is fine for some jobs but I don't see this one saving me anything.
