That $200 terrarium kit was a total disaster

I bought one of those pre-assembled closed terrariums at a garden show for 200 bucks. Looked amazing in the booth. Got it home and within three weeks the moss started going gray and the ferns just melted. Turns out the drainage layer was way too thin and the whole thing was basically a swamp. I pulled it apart and rebuilt it in a big pickle jar with proper gravel and charcoal. Cost me maybe 15 dollars for supplies. Now it's thriving, no mold, and I actually understand why. Anyone else get burned by a fancy kit?
