The wall of ferns at the Pittsburgh conservatory made me rethink my whole indoor setup
I was at Phipps Conservatory in Pittsburgh two weekends ago and stood in their fern room for like 20 minutes just watching how the fronds were arranged. I have maybe 14 ferns at home but they sit on separate shelves with a ton of space between them, and seeing them packed into one damp shady wall changed how I think about what they actually want. Has anyone else rebuilt a plant corner after seeing how a botanical garden groups stuff together?
The fern wall at Longwood Gardens got me the same way last spring. I stood there staring at how the fronds overlapped and dripped off each other and thought, why do I have mine spread out like little soldiers on a shelf. When I got home I moved 9 of my ferns onto one bench pushed right up against a north window with a humidifier running next to them. The difference was nuts, new croziers popping up within 2 weeks on stuff that had been sitting still for months. The crowding keeps the air around them damp and the ones underneath get shade from the ones above. Turns out they were never meant to be solo. Now I rotate the front ones to the back every few weeks so everybody gets a turn in the light.
