Watered my orchids wrong for 3 years until a nursery worker pointed it out

I had this big phalaenopsis that kept dropping leaves even though I watered it every week like clockwork. A lady at the local greenhouse asked if I let water sit in the crown and showed me how the stem was rotting from the inside out. Has anyone else killed a plant for years just because you never thought to check that one spot?

Wait, are we supposed to check the crown? I've been misting my orchids every morning for two years and wondering why they look like sad wet paper towels.

Three years of misting before I learned my orchid was drowning not thirsty.
