Just hit 10,000 bricks on one chimney and it stopped me cold

Was working a chimney job outside Cleveland last week and kept a tally as I always do. When I hit 10,000 bricks laid on that single structure I had to stop and think about it. That's a lot of mortar mixing and level checking without a single major screw up. Anyone else ever stop and count their total bricks on a big job and get surprised by the number?

Read in Fine Homebuilding that some mason in Chicago hit 15,000 on a high rise and lost count twice before finishing. 10,000 is still a hell of a milestone though, especially on a chimney.

Yeah "lost count twice" is exactly the kind of thing that would happen to me. I was helping a buddy lay pavers in his driveway last summer. After about 200 bricks I started doubting myself and had to count the whole row over again. Ended up with three leftover bricks that didn't fit anywhere and a gap at the end big enough for a dandelion to grow through. We just called it a "drainage feature.
