Knocked a retaining wall at Golden Gate Park, now I always dry-stack test before mortaring

Watched an 8-foot segment collapse two days after we finished because the base gravel wasn't compacted, and since then I've made every crew do a dry run on the footprint first, anyone else swear by that?

Heard a contractor say that once, saved his bacon. Good habit.

Used to think that was just old timer superstition but a buddy of mine had a mess on a site last spring and it genuinely saved him from a full redo. Now I check it every time without even thinking about it. Funny how a few guys whove been doing this forever can teach you something real.
