Leveling mortar with a straight 2x4 versus a screed board, which side are you on?

I spent 10 years tapping every brick down by eye and I still got low spots that showed up after rain. Last month on a patio job in Cincinnati I tried running a long 2x4 across my screed rails before laying the first course, and the bed came out dead flat for the first time ever. Half the guys I work with say it slows you down and the mortar bed should be adjusted per brick anyway. The other half swear a pre-leveled bed is the only way to keep a big wall from wandering. Has anyone else switched methods mid-career and seen their finished work change for the better or worse?
