Old timer corrected my mortar mix on a Friday job

Ngl, I was mixing 4:1 sand to cement for a garden wall in Portland last month and this retired mason watched me for a solid 10 minutes before saying anything. He finally walked over, grabbed a handful of my wet mix, and said 'this is for bricks that ain't been fired, son, not these hard pavers.' He had me swap to a 3:1 ratio with a splash of lime and the joints came out way tighter, no cracks after the rain we got. Anyone else had a random stranger on site fix their recipe and change how you mix for different units?
