Old timer told me to butter my bricks before laying them, I ignored him for 3 years

Finally tried it on a retaining wall job in Toledo last month and my alignment issues vanished completely. Has anyone else had a master bricklayer give you a weird tip that actually worked way better than the modern way?

Three years? Man, I would've caved after the first crooked wall, you've got some patience. That butter trick sounds like something my grandpa would've swore by, never heard of it before now.

Hah, I knew a guy who tried that butter thing on his sticky window. Let's just say the landlord was not thrilled about the raccoon situation that followed.
