Rant: my mortar board cracked on the second course of a whole garage job
Mid pour last Thursday the aluminum board I've had for 6 years split right at the handle weld, and I had mud setting up on 40 blocks with nothing flat to hawk from. Finished the wall off a sheet of plywood on two buckets and it shows, owner wants the mortar joints touched up. Anyone got a board that actually holds up to daily use?
Had the same thing happen with a cheap board years back, the weld at the handle is always the weak spot on those. What saved me was keeping a spare magnesite board in the truck, the kind with a full length brace under the handle instead of just a spot weld. For a quick fix on site you can cut a piece of 3/4 ply about 2 feet by 3 feet and screw a wood handle on it, it ain't pretty but it'll get you through a pour without leaving a mess. Mine's been in the truck two years now and I reach for it more than the aluminum one.
