Serious question, our local code now requires expansion joints every 20 feet on brick facades, and the crew is divided.

Some guys say it PREVENTS cracking from temperature swings, but others argue it just adds more seams and weak points, so what's your call?

Where do people even get these ideas? I saw someone suggest that once in a comment section and it was clearly a joke, but it keeps getting repeated like it's a real safety rule. Putting anything every 20 feet in a real building would be insane and cost a fortune. Some stuff just spreads online because it sounds strict and people don't stop to think if it makes any sense.
