Spent a whole day trying to fix a simple line on a curved wall

Got a job last week in the old part of town, a curved garden wall maybe 20 feet long. The plan called for a soldier course on top, simple enough. Laid the whole thing, stepped back, and the line was off. Not by a lot, but enough that it looked wrong. I must have spent three hours just staring at it, checking my level, checking my string line. The curve was throwing me off. Ended up taking every brick in that top course off and starting from scratch. What should have been a two hour finish took me from 7 AM until almost 5 PM. I was so mad at myself. How do you guys handle keeping a perfect line on a tight radius like that? Is it just eye and experience, or is there a trick I'm missing?

Three hours just staring at it" sounds like my last attempt at hanging a picture straight.
