My $12 acrylic yarn unraveled into a cat's toy after one wash, so I re-knit it using a cardboard tube from a paper towel roll

Last Tuesday I spent 4 hours knitting a scarf for my niece, threw it in the washer on delicate, and it came out looking like a tangled mess of spaghetti, so I wound the whole thing around a toilet paper tube and re-knit it with a handmade crochet hook I whittled from a chopstick, and honestly it worked better than the $9 metal hook I lost - has anyone else salvaged yarn this way or am I just cheap?
