The thrift store lady near 5th and Main showed me a trick with old jeans and I never looked at patches the same way again
I always thought you had to buy those iron-on patches for rips in jeans, they're like 8 bucks for a tiny pack. But this older lady at the Goodwill in Portland saw me holding a pair of jeans with a hole and just said 'just grab a worn-out pair for 2 dollars and cut patches from the leg.' She was right the fabric matches better and it's way cheaper. Has anyone else gotten a solid fix tip from a random person at a thrift shop?

Bro wait you just cut up a different pair to patch another? That's actually genius I never thought of that. I've been wasting so much money on those iron-on packs from the craft store that barely stick anyway. The color matching thing is huge too, the store patches always look so obvious and fake. This is the kind of life hack you only get from talking to strangers at thrift stores I swear.

Respectfully @noahward, I gotta disagree a little though. The iron-on patches actually WORK if you sew around the edges after ironing them on. I just did a pair last week and the patch has held up through three washes so far. Cutting up another pair of jeans works fine for small holes but for bigger rips the store patches have more stiffness that keeps the fabric from sagging weird. Different tools for different jobs I guess.
