Had to choose between a $5 frozen pizza or a $3 bag of rice and beans... guess which one I picked and regretted.

Look at the price again. That bag of rice and beans will feed you for days, not just one meal. The pizza is gone in ten minutes and you're hungry again. Short term thinking loses every time. You might feel bad now, but that rice was the right call for your wallet. Next time you'll remember the regret and make the better choice.
