My grocery bill dropped by $40 a week when I started buying whole chickens
I was getting killed by the price of chicken breasts, like $8 a pack for just a few. A friend in my building said to get the whole bird instead, so I grabbed one for $6 at the store. It felt weird to cut it up myself, but I watched a quick video and did it in maybe 10 minutes. I got two breasts, two thighs, two drumsticks, and wings from one chicken. The best part was using the leftover bones and skin to make a big pot of broth, which became soup for two more meals. Now I get three full dinners for my family from one cheap chicken. Has anyone else done this and found other ways to use every bit?

My time is worth more than the savings. Spending ten minutes cutting up a raw chicken, plus the time to make broth, feels like a second job. I tried it once and the mess with the bones and fat was not worth the hassle. I would rather pay extra for the convenience of pre-cut parts and use that time for something else.
