My local food bank in Springfield taught me how to stretch a can of beans

I was picking up a box last month and a volunteer showed me how to turn one 15-ounce can of black beans into three meals. She said to mash half for tacos, mix a quarter into rice, and use the rest for soup with some broth and frozen veggies. Has anyone else gotten a great budget cooking tip from an unexpected place?

That's such a good tip, mashing them for tacos is genius. My neighbor once showed me how to make a whole jar of cheap pasta sauce last longer by adding a can of crushed tomatoes and some dried herbs. It basically doubles it and tastes way better. I still do that every time now.

Yo that's actually brilliant. Does it work with any brand of sauce or just the super basic ones? I've tried adding tomato paste before but it just made everything too thick.
