My uncle swore by buying the cheapest rice in bulk, but it ruined my dinner.

He said the 20-pound bag for $8 was a steal, but it was full of broken grains and rocks. Has anyone else had a cheap staple ingredient completely fail on them?

Oh man, "full of broken grains and rocks" is the worst. I've definitely had that happen with cheap beans before. Spent more time picking out little stones than actually cooking.

You ever think sorting beans is just part of the process, @jakerivera? I buy cheap beans all the time and a quick look on a plate is all it takes. Finding a rock is rare if you get them from a decent store. That few minutes of checking feels worth it for the price. I'd rather do that than pay a lot more for the same food.

You ever catch yourself looking at a dried bean and wondering if it's a rock or just a really ugly bean? I swear I've spent a solid five minutes squinting at one, convinced I'd found a pebble, only to realize it's just a bean that got left out in the sun too long. Then I drop it in the pot anyway, and the whole time I'm cooking I'm paranoid I'm gonna crack a tooth on it. It's a weird little ritual, but yeah, sorting beans is the price you pay for cheap chili.
